The "FORGE" Video Review

Broc Raiford dropped his second video part of the year back in August, filmed and edited by Grant Castelluzzo. Broc did the art for this one himself, so all the title screens are his work. Pretty awesome for your own video part.

Broc Raiford in FORGE by Grant Castelluzzo

Broc Raiford dropped his second video part of the year back in August, filmed and edited by Grant Castelluzzo. Broc did the art for this one himself, so all the title screens are his work. Pretty awesome for your own video part. Kinda surprised they didn’t use his bands music as well, but maybe that is a step too far.

Personal gripe before we get into it... can we give the constant Super 8 B-roll a rest? It seems like every top-tier pro video fills any empty space with the same Super 8 footage. A few filmers seem to steer clear of the trend like Rich Forne and Justin Benthien come to mind) but it's definitely not the norm. I’m over it.

One of the first clips that really popped out for me - that truck to Smith drop off the ledge. That's some Captain America biking behavior right there. For some reason, I’ve always thought of Broc as the Captain America of BMX street riding. Clean, dialed, all American, an unstoppable force. I feel like in recent years he's tried to distance himself from that image, but for me it hasn't worked. That's a compliment, I think. I guess it might depend on how you feel about Marvel movies.

Broc is one of those riders where most of the clips are stuff nobody else can really do. That super pro level of riding makes it hard to comment on every trick. So many of these clips would be the standout trick in a random kid's part, so for something to make me pause, it's gotta be something like: super unique spot, super unique spot usage, or exceptional filming.
Like that wall ride out of the bank. That's fucking sick.

I can only imagine landing in the Smith on that ledge knowing I then have to pop out of it into a nose on that square column directly in front of it. That's quite a hop up out of a Smith, and fast too. All I can envision is landing in the Smith and running straight into that column. But he does it so smooth you almost don't even think about it.

I will say, I liked the first song better than the second. Just personal preference, but if you're gonna run a really fast paced, high tempo song, every clip needs to hit like that manual to bar gap. Cut it fast, throw in some hijinks, and preferably film it on a VX or something. The ultra clear, polished 4K footage doesn't vibe with that genre of music for me.

The clip on those two gas line boxes, or whatever they are, is very sick. Loved the way it was filmed. Oh, then there's another one right after that on the same type of box. Oh shit another one. Three in a row! I'm sure Grant did that on purpose, and it worked. I want to go ride those things.

The hard 180 up the handrail at 5:40 (shout out 540s) I guess is a thread the needle situation. Hard 180 out of and over the rail going up the stairs, before the end of the rail, so he doesn't clip the gate at the top. The physics of that make no sense to me. Fucked.

I've always loved those hanger to over-rail things. There's a name for it that I can't think of right now. Always reminds me of the one Ty does in either Deadline or Fiending. They make zero sense to me and I love them.

And then that ender. Regular pegs up a fuckin' handrail, hard 180 over the rail, land regular pegs going back down the rail, then hard 180 out. What the hell? The clip itself is crazy, and probably one of the best clips for the song too, timing with the song is perfect. Props to Grant on a perfect ending.

In recent memory, this is my favorite Grant Castelluzzo video. He's already legendary for the amount of projects he's been involved over the years with and his consistent output, and I think this is some of his best work yet. Great work Grant, and great work Broc.
